Britain requires Google to offer a choice of search engines and AI assistants

The UK's competition regulator has presented new requirements for Google. If the proposal is approved, Android and Chrome users will have the ability to choose AI assistants alongside search engines.

Google will be required to show users a choice screen when setting up an Android phone and selecting initial settings, as well as when opening Chrome. There, users will be able to choose their preferred search engine and AI assistant.

The regulator is also asking Google to clearly indicate the source of publishers' materials. This will allow users to see where the information comes from and, if they wish, go to the original source.

Public consultation on the proposals will continue until October 9, with a final decision expected by the end of the year. Adoption of the rules would give Google's competitors a new opportunity to attract users on Android and Chrome.
