**A court has ordered Apple to pay $5.7 billion**

A U.S. federal jury has ruled that Apple infringed on two patents belonging to Taction. According to the verdict, the tech giant must pay the San Diego-based company more than $5.7 billion.

The case concerns the Taptic Engine used in the iPhone and Apple Watch. This system responds to touch with physical feedback. Taction argued that Apple used its patented technology to create this feature. The jury agreed with this argument and ruled that Apple had infringed on Taction's patents.

Apple plans to appeal the decision. The company states that the Taptic Engine relies on entirely different technology, and that Taction's own research confirms this. Apple is also questioning the validity of the patents.

Taction filed the lawsuit in 2021. In 2023, a federal judge found no infringement by Apple, but an appeals court sent the case back for retrial. According to Reuters, the $5.7 billion sum is the largest patent-related court award in U.S. history.
