Trump Threatens to Increase Tariffs on Canadian Automobiles to 50%

US President Donald Trump threatens to increase tariffs on automobiles, trucks, and auto parts imported from Canada by up to 50%. If implemented, the new tariffs will take effect on January 1, 2027.

Negotiations between the US and Canada concluded unsuccessfully last week. The parties discussed reducing tariffs on Canadian vehicles and light trucks from 25% to 15%, and on steel and aluminum from 50% to 25%, but no agreement was reached.

Trump's announcement was followed by a decline in automaker stock prices. Ford's stock price fell by approximately 3.6%, Stellantis by 4.2%, and General Motors by 1.6%. Toyota's shares dropped 1.5%, and Honda's by 2.1%.

The US automotive industry is significantly dependent on automobiles and parts manufactured in Canada. According to the Canadian auto parts manufacturers association, higher tariffs will increase costs for American factories as well, since automobile production in the US will be hindered without Canadian parts.

Canada, for its part, plans to impose retaliatory tariffs on a portion of American goods starting September 8. According to Prime Minister Mark Carney, an agreement with the US is possible if negotiations proceed with respect for Canada's sovereignty.
