Anthropic Opens Laboratory for Biological Research in the San Francisco Bay Area

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has set up a laboratory for physical biological research in the San Francisco Bay Area, as the company seeks to expand its use of AI in life sciences and medicine.

Speaking to Reuters, Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic's head of life sciences, confirmed that the company has a so-called "wet lab" — a space where physical experiments are conducted. According to him, the company's biological research has already moved beyond purely "in silico," or computational modeling and simulation.

"The final test for studying biology still happens in real lab work, and that will be the case for some time," Kauderer-Abrams said in an interview with Reuters.

According to him, Anthropic works in this direction both in its own laboratories and with external partners, and the approach resembles practices common in biotechnology companies.

However, an Anthropic representative later clarified that the company's lab is not used directly for drug discovery. The company declined to provide further details about the lab's activities.

Anthropic's move into biological sciences is part of the company's broader ambition to use artificial intelligence against diseases that, in its assessment, the pharmaceutical industry does not pay sufficient attention to. However, the success of any treatment program is not guaranteed, as most drugs fail to meet safety and efficacy requirements during clinical trials.

For Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei, this direction also carries personal significance. In an essay published recently, he wrote that a disease claimed his father's life at a time when no effective treatment for it existed yet, though a cure was found just a few years later.

According to Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic's mission is to develop powerful artificial intelligence in a way that benefits society. He said the company sees this potential especially in the life sciences, and this is what shapes its current work.

The launch of Anthropic's laboratory research also shows that AI companies are increasingly trying to apply artificial intelligence models to real scientific processes — not only to data analysis and computer simulations, but also to physical experiments.
