The United States Examines Clinical Trials Conducted in China

US Congress Launches Investigation into Major Pharmaceutical Companies' Activities in China

The US Congress has initiated an investigation into the operations of five major pharmaceutical companies. The matter concerns clinical trials conducted in China and possible connections with military institutions.

The House Select Committee on China is requesting information from Merck, AbbVie, Eli Lilly, Pfizer, and Bristol Myers Squibb. The committee is interested in whether the companies conducted research in Chinese military hospitals or in the Xinjiang region.

According to American lawmakers, such research could pose national security risks, as there is a concern that American medical technology and research knowledge could become accessible to China's military sector.

Special attention is being paid to the Xinjiang region, where human rights violations have been discussed for years. The committee is also verifying whether proper informed consent was obtained from individuals participating in the research.

The number of clinical trials in China has grown rapidly in recent years. This is attributed to lower costs and government support. In 2025, global pharmaceutical companies spent $138 billion on deals related to Chinese experimental medications.

At this stage, no violations have been established on the part of the companies. However, the US is already considering new regulations that would subject investments in biotechnology in China and licensing agreements to stricter review. Following the launch of the investigation, the share prices of pharmaceutical companies declined.
