DoorDash to Acquire Instacart for $17 Billion

DoorDash will acquire grocery delivery platform Instacart for $17 billion. The deal will significantly strengthen the company's position in the grocery delivery market, though it will require approval from US regulators before it can be completed.
According to YipitData, DoorDash accounted for 65.1% of delivery orders from restaurants, stores and other retail outlets last year. Uber Eats held a 25.8% share, while Instacart's share was 9.1%.
Regulators will focus their attention on both competition and pricing, as well as the use of customer data. Instacart already had an incident last year in which it showed different prices for the same product to different customers.
DoorDash will likely try to prove that its competitors are not limited to delivery platforms, and that Walmart, Amazon and Target also operate in the same market. Nevertheless, the main obstacle to the deal will be antitrust scrutiny.
