Google Acquires Stake in Film Studio A24 and Launches Artificial Intelligence Research

Tech giant Google and independent film studio A24 are launching a joint research project in the field of artificial intelligence. According to Wall Street Journal, Google is investing $75 million in the studio — marking the first time the company has become a shareholder in a film studio. As part of this partnership, Google's subsidiary DeepMind and A24 will jointly develop software that will streamline film production and distribution.
According to the finalized agreement, the technology giant will not have access to A24's archive of films and series. The parties explain that their goal is not to create generative artificial intelligence (AI), which has caused significant discontent among directors, but rather to develop assistant tools that preserve creative freedom and control for artists. For example, the studio's technology laboratory (A24 Labs) is already working on a visual storyboarding tool. This program will help directors identify potential technical issues in advance during the filming process.
This move represents another attempt by Google to establish itself in the film industry, which was previously evidenced by its support for the Sundance Institute and the presentation of new visualization tools. Nevertheless, debates around the use of artificial intelligence in Hollywood continue to be active, as many industry representatives remain skeptical of this technology.
