Retail Sales in Italy Remained Unchanged in April

According to data from Italy's National Institute of Statistics, ISTAT, retail sales in the country remained unchanged in April compared to March. This followed a 0.8% increase in sales during March.
On an annual basis, according to unadjusted figures, retail sales grew by 1.6%. However, this indicator is expressed in nominal terms and does not account for the effects of inflation.
Consumer prices in Italy increased by 2.8% year-on-year in April, which suggests that real consumption growth may be lower than the official figures indicate.
By category, according to seasonally adjusted data, food sales increased by 0.2% in April, while non-food product sales declined by 0.2%.
For comparison, food sales in March had increased by 0.9%, while non-food product sales grew by 0.7%.
The data suggests that Italian consumer spending slowed somewhat in April, reflecting cautious consumer behavior against a backdrop of inflation and economic uncertainty.
