# Digital Euro Launch Planned from 2029

Digital Euro Project Enters New Phase in the European Union
The process of creating a digital euro in the European Union is moving into a new stage. The project aims to offer citizens a new payment method alongside cash and to make Europe's payment system less dependent on foreign platforms.
The European Parliament has supported the digital euro project. If the legislative process is completed within the planned timeline, a pilot program will begin in 2027-2028, and widespread use of the digital euro will likely become possible starting in 2029.
The digital euro will be intended for everyday payments. It does not envisage replacing cash and will serve as an additional alternative. Users will access it through special digital wallets offered by commercial banks and payment service providers, while the European Central Bank will ensure currency issuance and system management.
According to the project, an individual user will likely be able to hold a maximum of 3,000 euros. No interest will be accrued on this amount, and in case the limit is exceeded, the excess funds will automatically be transferred to a bank account.
The European Central Bank is paying particular attention to protecting users' personal data. Payments made via the internet will be protected by the same security standards that currently apply to electronic payments.
The European Union believes that the digital euro will strengthen Europe's financial independence and reduce dependence on foreign payment systems. Additionally, the project is viewed as one of the significant milestones in the digitalization process of the financial sector.
