Against the Backdrop of New 5G Networks, the US Tightens Aviation Safety Regulations

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a final decision requiring all aircraft operating in U.S. airspace to be equipped with next-generation radioaltimeters by 2027.

A radioaltimeter is one of the most critical safety systems on an aircraft, providing precise measurements of its altitude above ground level. This equipment is particularly essential in poor visibility conditions, when pilots rely on its data during takeoff and landing operations. The FAA believes that some existing equipment is not sufficiently protected from potential 5G signal interference, making their replacement necessary.

FAA regulations also limit the power output of 5G transmitters and set height restrictions for antenna installations to prevent additional risks to aviation. Airlines that need to purchase new equipment will receive support through a state-sponsored compensation program.

According to the FAA's assessment, the total cost of equipping aircraft with new altimeters is approximately $4.49 billion. However, the agency stated that the compensation program will enable airlines to complete the implementation of new technologies several years earlier than would have been possible without this additional financial support.
