Bill Gates's TerraPower Wants to Launch Its First Reactor in Britain by 2034

Bill Gates-backed American company TerraPower plans to build a nuclear reactor in the UK. According to the company's plan, the plant will begin operating in 2034. This will be TerraPower's first project outside the US.

The company builds Natrium-type reactors. Each of them will generate 345 megawatts of electricity, and with the use of a special energy storage system, capacity could be temporarily boosted to up to 500 megawatts.

TerraPower's first such reactor is already under construction in Wyoming and is scheduled to be commissioned by 2031. In the UK, the project is still at an early stage. The technology is being reviewed by the regulator, and a site has not yet been chosen.

According to TerraPower CEO Chris Levesque, the cost of one megawatt-hour of electricity should be less than £100.

The company already has an agreement with Meta to build up to eight reactors in the US. TerraPower is also considering starting similar cooperation in the UK in the future.
