EU Leaders Discuss Energy Prices and Chinese Imports

EU leaders are gathering in Brussels. The main topics of the meeting are rising energy costs, the future budget, and the rapid growth of imports from China. High energy costs are making it harder for European companies to compete, while governments are struggling to find additional funds to support their economies.
There is also disagreement among countries over how the EU budget should be spent. Germany and other countries that contribute large sums to the common budget are calling for spending cuts. France, however, believes that spending cuts alone will not solve Europe's competitiveness problem.
The goods trade deficit with China reached €360 billion in 2025. The EU plans to continue negotiations with Beijing, but is also considering additional measures to protect European companies. France and Germany are particularly focused on the growing imports of chemical products and packaging plastics.
There is also disagreement over the EU's Emissions Trading System, under which companies must pay for their emissions. Czechia and Italy want the rules eased or temporarily suspended. Scandinavian countries, however, believe this would reduce investment in clean energy.
The meeting will also discuss funding allocated for Ukraine in 2027.
