The U.S. Supreme Court to Review Climate Lawsuit Against ExxonMobil and Suncor

The US Supreme Court is reviewing a lawsuit filed against ExxonMobil and Suncor Energy. The companies are seeking to have Boulder's lawsuit dismissed. The city's authorities want ExxonMobil and Suncor to be held liable for damages caused by climate change.
Boulder's authorities claim that for years the companies misled the public about the impact of fossil fuels and themselves contributed to climate change. The city is seeking compensation from them for infrastructure restoration, environmental damage, and other related costs.
ExxonMobil and Suncor argue that such matters are governed by federal law and that the dispute should not be heard under state law. This position is also supported by the Trump administration.
Nearly 60 states and local governments in the US have filed similar lawsuits against oil companies. If the Supreme Court rules in favor of the companies, this could affect other ongoing cases as well. A final ruling is expected by the end of June 2027.
