At the G20 meeting, the US will discuss tariffs, Iran, and global trade

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will meet with G20 finance ministers and central bank governors this week. At the meeting, the US will focus attention on problems in international trade, economic growth, and restricting business ties with Iran.

The meeting comes amid a number of economic challenges. New US tariffs have affected many countries, the trade dispute with Canada continues, and the war with Iran has driven up prices for oil and other raw materials. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has further complicated energy supplies.

The US is particularly critical of China's trade policy and is calling on Beijing to reduce its reliance on exports. Concern is also growing in Europe over the rapidly increasing imports of Chinese goods, including electric vehicles and semiconductors.

At the same time, the US's own financial situation is also in the spotlight. The country's national debt has exceeded $40 trillion, and the yield on 30-year bonds has risen to its highest level in 19 years, meaning Bessent will need to reassure partners not only on trade policy but also on the management of US debt.
