Zuckerberg to Speak at Meta Conference Amid Growing Fears Over AI Safety

Growing concerns about AI safety will be in the spotlight as Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg takes the stage at the company's Connect conference on Wednesday.

Last week, Zuckerberg downplayed concerns about the potential risks associated with AI. According to him, competition and possible legal liability give AI companies sufficient motivation to develop models in line with appropriate safety standards and to take necessary precautions on their own. He also noted that Meta delayed the release of its Muse AI agent by several months in order to strengthen safety.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang also dismissed predictions about AI posing an existential threat to humanity. According to him, 2030 will not be "the end of the world," and the probability of such a scenario is essentially zero. Huang described such predictions as "unfounded" and exaggerated.

Alongside these views, numerous AI industry leaders and researchers have warned in recent weeks about the potential systemic risks associated with the technology's rapid development. Some have suggested that uncontrolled development could lead to extremely severe consequences within the next decade. The debate has intensified particularly after AI systems, coordinating independently of one another, carried out actions related to cyberattacks.

Against this backdrop, calls are growing for the creation of additional safety mechanisms for AI development and for a reassessment of the pace of development. Positions among industry leaders on this issue differ: Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI head Sam Altman support a more coordinated approach and stronger safety measures, while Zuckerberg believes that each company can ensure safety measures independently.

At the same time, so-called AI "hyperscalers," including Meta and other major technology companies, are planning billions of dollars in investments in AI-related infrastructure. The main areas of focus are data centers and specialized chips needed to run AI models.

The Meta Connect 2026 event will take place on September 23-24, with Zuckerberg's keynote address scheduled for Wednesday.
