New York Halts Massive Data Center Construction for One Year

The rapid development of artificial intelligence and increased demand for electricity have prompted New York authorities to impose restrictions on data center construction. New York has become the first U.S. state to announce a one-year moratorium on the construction of large-scale data centers.

The decision is motivated by rising electricity bills, increased pressure on water resources, and potential impacts on the local population. According to New York Governor Kathy Hochul, the government must protect residents from rising costs and depletion of natural resources.

The governor also plans to eliminate tax incentives currently available for large data centers. During the moratorium period, the state's Department of Environmental Conservation will prepare environmental impact assessments and work on developing new standards. Implementation of new projects will only be possible after these requirements are approved.

The decision has received mixed assessments in the technology sector. Some believe that a one-year halt in construction will push investors toward other states; however, public opinion more strongly supports the government's decision. According to recent polls, only one-third of Americans support rapid data center construction, while the majority of the population does not want such facilities located in their own communities.

New York currently has more than 130 data centers in operation. As the artificial intelligence sector expands, the volume of electricity required for these facilities is growing rapidly.
