Nvidia will supply the UK with $250 million worth of technical resources for artificial intelligence safety research

Nvidia will support artificial intelligence safety research in Britain over the next five years with $250 million worth of technical capabilities.
The company will allocate around $50 million worth of resources annually. One of the main directions of the research will be examining the behavior of AI systems, particularly programs capable of performing tasks independently. Scientists will also work on ways to reduce the risk of such systems acting in undesirable or dangerous ways.
Britain is seeking to establish itself as one of the leading centers for AI safety research. To this end, the state-run AI Security Institute has already been created there.
Several universities will benefit from Nvidia's support, including Oxford University, Imperial College London, and University College London.
The research will cover both AI systems that work alongside humans, as well as robotics and other emerging technologies.
The issue of AI safety has become especially relevant after several companies disclosed cases in which systems acted in undesirable or unforeseen ways.
