Two American publications sue OpenAI and Microsoft

The Seattle Times and Newsday have sued OpenAI and Microsoft in court. The publications accuse the companies of using their articles without permission to train artificial intelligence.

According to the lawsuit, OpenAI and Microsoft collected materials from the publications' websites and used them to build the AI functions of ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Bing. The publications claim that the materials used also included articles available only through paid subscriptions.

According to the media companies, the AI systems are capable of reproducing parts of their texts and, in some cases, conveying the content of articles almost in full. In their view, this means readers no longer need to view the original article or subscribe to the publication.

OpenAI states that its models learn from publicly available information and that such use is permitted under U.S. law. Microsoft has said it is ready to discuss the matter.

The publications are asking the court to order the companies to delete copies of their materials as well as any datasets in which these articles were used.

The New York Times is also suing OpenAI and Microsoft over copyright issues.
