SpaceX and Tesla Are Discussing a Merger

Elon Musk has given a positive assessment of a possible merger between SpaceX and Tesla. Both companies have set up special committees to study the potential terms of the deal, though Musk himself is not taking part in their work. A final agreement has not yet been reached.
The combined market value of SpaceX and Tesla is approximately $3.5 trillion. A merger would bring together businesses spanning electric vehicles, robotics, artificial intelligence, satellites and space programs under one company. This would give the companies greater opportunities to cut costs and fund joint projects.
The potential deal also carries certain complications. SpaceX is a major contractor for the US defense sector, while Tesla conducts extensive manufacturing operations in China, so regulators may pay particular attention to issues of data sharing and corporate governance. The merger would also require approval from both companies' shareholders.
