Negotiations on the $42 billion LNG project in Tanzania are nearing completion

The Tanzanian government expects to reach an agreement on a $42 billion LNG project in the coming months. The project is being led by Equinor and Shell, alongside ExxonMobil, Pavilion Energy, Medco Energi, and the state-owned Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation.

The project involves extracting and processing Tanzania's vast natural gas reserves. Most of the produced LNG will be exported, while a portion will remain for the domestic market. The government hopes the project will strengthen the country's role in the East African energy market.

According to Finance Minister Mwigulu Nchemba, Tanzania plans to nearly double its electricity generation capacity to 8,000 megawatts by 2030. At that point, about 75% of electricity is expected to come from hydro, solar, wind, and natural gas plants.

The government is also finalizing negotiations on two projects related to critical minerals extraction.
