Trump-Xi Jinping Meeting in Focus Among This Week's Key Events

One of this week's major events will be the planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. At the summit scheduled for September 24 in Washington, the leaders will discuss trade relations along with artificial intelligence and other economic issues.

In the four months since their last face-to-face meeting, China's foreign trade has grown significantly, while Trump's approval ratings in the US have declined. Against this backdrop, attention is focused on extending the trade truce that the two sides established last year to ease pressure on the global economy following the escalation of US-China retaliatory tariffs.

Ahead of the summit, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng concluded negotiations in New York on Sunday. At the meeting, the US proposed that China establish a notification mechanism for AI-related incidents. The initiative envisions establishing a dialogue between the two countries in the field of AI, focused on exchanging information about national security risks, shared goals, and significant incidents.

According to Bessent, greater transparency between the world's two largest AI powers is important, particularly in cases where AI-related events reach the level of national security concern. However, the two sides have not yet reached a final agreement on this issue.

In preparation for the meeting between Trump and Xi Jinping, tariffs, rare earth exports, and other trade-related issues are also being discussed.
