US Employment Report Is in the Spotlight for Investors

Following Thursday's sharp selloff in the stock markets, investors' attention is now turning to the US employment report, due out today. The data could prove significant in assessing the Federal Reserve's (Fed) next steps on monetary policy.

Market forecasts suggest the US economy added 65,000 jobs in October, up from the previous month's figure of 29,000. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate is expected to hold steady at September's level of 4.2%.

Data confirming the resilience of the labor market could give the Fed additional grounds to raise interest rates at its final meeting of the year in December. The central bank has repeatedly signaled its desire to bring down elevated inflation, and strong employment figures would give it more room to tighten monetary policy.

However, analysts at Deutsche Bank note that renewed concerns related to artificial intelligence have increased uncertainty in the market. In their assessment, questions have resurfaced over whether the Fed will decide to raise interest rates again.

Following the recent stock market selloff, financial markets have lowered the probability of a rate hike in December. As a result, the new employment report is especially important for investors: strong data could reinforce expectations of a rate increase, while weak results would keep uncertainty about the Fed's next moves alive.
