US Stock Futures Rise as Market Awaits Inflation Data

U.S. stock index futures rose slightly on Wednesday as investors focused on July consumer inflation (CPI) data. The report could prove significant for assessing the Federal Reserve's future interest rate policy.

At 06:24 ET, Dow futures gained 0.1%, S&P 500 futures rose 0.3%, while the technology-focused Nasdaq 100 increased 0.7%. In the previous session, the S&P 500 fell 0.3%, Nasdaq Composite declined 0.6%, and the Dow Jones dropped 0.3%.

Economists expect annual inflation to slow to 3.4% in July, down from 3.5% recorded in June. On a month-over-month basis, core CPI is projected to grow by 0.2%.

The inflation data is particularly significant following weak U.S. labor market indicators in September, which reduced expectations for a Fed rate hike. However, higher-than-expected inflation could reinforce expectations of monetary policy tightening.

Currently, market participants are nearly evenly divided on whether the Fed will keep rates unchanged or increase them by 25 basis points. Higher interest rates help reduce inflation, though they may simultaneously exert additional pressure on economic growth and employment.
