The US and China are conducting negotiations on trade and critical minerals

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng are holding talks in New York on trade and economic issues.

The main topics of the meeting are tariffs, trade in critical minerals, and issues related to artificial intelligence safety.

The negotiations come ahead of a planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The sides are also discussing an extension of the US-China trade agreement, which is set to expire on November 10.

The US wants to increase the supply of rare metals and other critical minerals from China. These materials are needed for the production of semiconductors, electric vehicles, and other technology products. Also on the agenda are reductions in tariffs on certain goods, as well as the issue of China purchasing American agricultural products and Boeing aircraft.

The meeting took place on September 20 at JPMorgan Chase's New York office. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is also taking part in the negotiations.
