Germany's Trade Deficit with China Increased

Germany's trade deficit with China has increased in the first half of 2026. German exports to China fell by more than 12% and dropped below €37 billion, while imports from China rose by 8.9% to €91.8 billion. As a result, the trade deficit between the two countries increased to €55 billion, compared to €40 billion a year earlier.

China remains Germany's largest trading partner, though its importance for German products is declining. In 2021, China was Germany's second-largest export market, but now ranks ninth.

According to Germany Trade & Invest, the decline in exports is driven by weakness in China's economy and the strengthening of local production. German companies are also increasingly manufacturing products directly in China.

According to Commerzbank economists, this trend indicates that China is becoming less dependent on Western manufacturing and is rapidly advancing technologically.
