JPMorgan Upgrades Biogen Stock Rating — Focus on 2027 Clinical Results

On Monday, JPMorgan upgraded biotechnology company Biogen's stock rating from Neutral to Overweight. According to the bank's assessment, the company's long-term growth prospects have improved, with several significant clinical trial results expected to be published in 2027.

JPMorgan set a December 2027 price target of $300 for Biogen shares. Analyst Chris Shotts believes the company is gradually moving beyond the business framework that was largely tied to the Alzheimer's disease drug Leqembi. In his assessment, Biogen is shaping up to be one of the attractive investment opportunities heading into 2027.

Three Key Clinical Directions

JPMorgan's focus centers on three of the company's drugs, whose trial results could significantly impact Biogen's future growth.

The first and most important direction is felzartamab, which is being studied for the treatment of antibody-mediated rejection following kidney transplantation. JPMorgan values this opportunity at a potential market of over $2 billion. Phase 3 trial results for the drug are expected in the first half of 2027. According to Shotts, this direction alone could deliver results better than analysts' current forecasts.

The second direction relates to the prospects for Leqembi. JPMorgan is focusing attention on Eli Lilly's TRAILBLAZER-ALZ-3 trial, which is studying the preclinical stage of Alzheimer's disease. The bank sees a high probability of success in this trial and believes that a positive outcome would significantly expand the potentially accessible market for this class of drugs.

The third direction is litifilimab, which is being studied for the treatment of cutaneous lupus erythematosus. There are currently no approved specific therapies for this condition. Trial data for the drug is expected to be published in the first half of 2027.

In addition, results from two Phase 3 trials of litifilimab for systemic lupus erythematosus are due to be published in the fourth quarter of this year. Shotts considers these trials to carry higher risk, but believes that holding Biogen shares ahead of the data release is nonetheless justified. In his assessment, even if the shares decline following the trial results, they could recover quickly.

JPMorgan's position shows that the focus in Biogen's valuation is shifting away from Leqembi alone toward a broader perspective on the company's development. The clinical results expected in 2027 could become a significant factor influencing the company's growth potential and the future valuation of its shares.
