Microsoft plans to use over one million Maia 300 chips by 2027

Microsoft has unveiled its new AI chip, Maia 300. According to the company, the number of such processors could exceed a million by 2027.

Maia 300 is designed for tasks such as code generation, processing large volumes of data, and automating various operations. Its predecessor is already being used in Microsoft's models and in OpenAI products available on Azure.

According to Microsoft, Maia 300 performs about 40% more work using the same amount of electricity compared to the GPU systems widely used today.

The core of Maia 300 will be manufactured using TSMC's 2-nanometer technology. A single server system will house 96 of these chips.

By developing its own chips, Microsoft is seeking to reduce the costs of providing AI services and decrease its dependence on Nvidia chips. The company plans to spend more than $175 billion on technology infrastructure this year.
