Senator Lindsey Graham passed away at the age of 71.

Republican Senator from South Carolina Lindsey Graham passed away at the age of 71. Shortly before his death, he was in Ukraine, where he held official meetings. Graham, considered one of the most influential Republicans in American politics, had served in the U.S. Senate since 2003.

His political career in Congress began in 1994. Before his election to the Senate, Graham was a member of the House of Representatives. At various periods, he chaired the Senate Judiciary and Budget Committees and was particularly active on matters of foreign policy and national security.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Graham strongly criticized Donald Trump, though he later became one of his closest allies. Trump called the senator's death a great loss and referred to him as a "true American patriot."

Graham was one of the active supporters of a tougher policy against Russia. Before his death, he was working on a bipartisan bill that would impose additional sanctions against Russia.

Following his passing, the Governor of South Carolina must appoint a temporary replacement to the Senate. Later, elections will be held to fill the vacant seat.
